Ripon Centre is 15 minutes' walk downhill from Hutton Mount Rerteats. From there you have immediate access to river paths, canal towpaths, countryside and woodland. All three of our properties welcome dogs.


1. City Centre Discovery Trail 0.9 miles | 30 minutes | Paved streets | Easy Dogs welcome — on lead
A loop around the heart of Ripon from the Market Square, taking in Fishergate, Temple Gardens, the Workhouse Museum, the Prison and Police Museum, and Ripon Cathedral. A good first walk to get your bearings in the city.

2. City Centre and River Skell Discovery Trail 1.5 miles | 45 minutes | Paved streets and riverside path | Easy Dogs welcome — river swimming available
From the Market Square through the Spa Gardens, along the River Skell to the Water Rat pub, then back via High St Agnesgate to the Cathedral. The riverside section is good for dogs.

3. Ripon Riverside Walk 1.1 miles | 25 minutes | Riverside path | Easy Dogs welcome — off lead in places
A short, easy loop along the banks of the River Skell. Plenty of birdlife and good water access for dogs. Can be extended along the river or the canal.

4. Ripon Canal Walk Variable — turn back at any point | 45 minutes to 2 hours | Canal towpath | Easy Excellent for dogs — open water throughout
Follows Ripon Canal south from the canal basin past moored narrowboats, locks, and a wetland bird sanctuary alongside Ripon Racecourse. Flat, easy walking on a well-maintained towpath. Walk as far as you like and retrace your steps, or loop back via the Water Rat pub and Cathedral.

5. Ripon and Studley Royal Circular 6.9 miles | 3 to 3.5 hours | Grass, gravel and woodland paths | Moderate Dogs welcome — lead required in Studley Royal deer park
Circular walk from Ripon Cathedral through Whitcliffe Wood nature reserve and into Studley Royal Park, passing the lake and returning along the River Skell. No stiles — gates and steps only. Good off-lead stretches on enclosed paths. Swimming opportunities on the return. Note: dogs must be on a lead at all times within the National Trust deer park, and through any field holding cattle.

6. Ripon to Fountains Abbey — National Trust Walk Circular from Ripon Cathedral | Mixed paths and fields | Moderate Dogs welcome — lead required at all times on National Trust land
Walks from Ripon Cathedral to Fountains Abbey via Studley Royal deer park's lime avenue, then returns through the Seven Bridges Valley. A rewarding full route to one of England's great heritage sites. Note: dogs must be kept on a lead at all times on National Trust land. There is an entry fee if you enter the paid area of Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

7. Ripon Sanctuary Way 9.7 miles | 4 to 4.5 hours | Roads, riverside paths and farmland | Moderate Dogs welcome — lead required on road sections and near livestock
A circular route around Ripon combining the River Ure, open farmland, the golf course perimeter and town streets. Varied terrain with good countryside views. Some road walking — suitable footwear recommended.

8. Masham, Hackfall and Swinton Circular 6.5 miles | 3 to 3.5 hours | Woodland, riverside and fields | Moderate Dogs welcome — lead on country lanes and near livestock
A 20-minute drive from Hutton Mount takes you to the market town of Masham. This circular route follows the River Ure, passes through the ancient woodland of Hackfall — a Site of Special Scientific Interest — and returns via the Swinton Estate. Good river sections throughout. Masham has pubs, cafes and a brewery for afterwards. Some sections can be muddy — boots recommended.

9. Hackfall Explorer 3 miles | 1 to 1.5 hours | Woodland paths | Moderate Dogs welcome — lead recommended on steep sections
A shorter woodland walk entirely within Hackfall near Masham, a 20-minute drive from the retreat. Ancient woodland, waterfalls, follies and castle ruins in a steep river gorge. Paths are unmade and uneven with tree roots — sturdy boots essential. Not suitable for young children on the gorge paths.
